Lots of bugs
We've been using this for many years and it used to be a go to application for control over employers computers and classroom computers. Since 3.9 the ARD hads been riddled with bugs. It is impossible to control a classroom of 35 computers with ARD crashing, and crashing, and crashing again. I have to rely on an older 10.6.8 with 3.5 to get the work done.
Not worth it and curtain mode need major improvements
I bought this app for 100 USD (!!!) to get the “curtain mode” functionality (to be able to do proper remote login without showing the screen/desktop on the local computer) and what can I say, Apple Remote Desktop has tons to learn from Remote Desktop on Windows. When you are in “curtain mode” and loose network connectivity and/or shutdown the app, voila your local computer’s desktop/screen is turned on and make it accessible to anyone in front of the local computer. THANK YOU for NOTHING! I feel robbed and then I got stabbed afterwards although I handed over my wallet.
I just need the client….
I needed the client software but had to pay for the full package to save time…Bummer
Fantastic
This is a great Application. I am managing 60 Macs with it. I can chat with users, make sure all of them have the same Mac OS version. I can research which version of other apps they have installed. Great.
Amazingly useful
This package seems to be sold with a very large discount in the app store, so I bought it immediately. We have six Macs of varying age in the house, and I also wanted to evaluate the application for the school I'm doing some network support for, where they have 200+ MacBooks and MacBooks Pro. The only thing I can't figure out is if the app store version is max 10 clients or unlimited, that isn't specified anywhere, so I'm hoping it's unlimited. Sadly, I can't go out and shop another five Macs just to find out if I can get to 11... Anyway, my first test was to set up a Mac Mini to be the "transaction server". It runs OSX server and is always on. Then I had to enable remote management on all client computers manually (sharing prefs), and download the remote management client on each of them manually. After that, everything could be run from the Remote Desktop app on my workstation. I briefly went through an excellent set of parameters you can get reports on. Then I proceeded to remotely install LibreOffice. You can only remote install apps in pkg files and LibreOffice comes as a bare app. Just five minutes with the package creator app that comes with XCode fixed that. (For me, having had to deal with Installshield years ago, this package manager was a revelation.) After that, I could just drop the new package on my local Remote Desktop app, which proceeded to upload it to the Mac Mini server, which in turn pushed out the install to the two clients I had specified when they came online. The install happened entirely invisibly and without a hitch. After that, I downloaded the OSX 10.6.6 update as a dmg from Apple support downloads, and pushed that one out to three machines. Absolutely painless, installed in the background, asked the local user for permission to reboot, and rebooted. All the while I just sat there slackjawed and with a smile. This thing is great. I haven't tested all of it by far, but everything I tried until now works like a dream. I love it.
